We all looked forward to those summer weekends away from the city. We poured over the Ohio campground directory, and made suggestions. Mom, the organizer, had us gathering all the food and equipment supplies we needed, checking each item off her mimeographed list while Dad made sure we all knew how to roll our sleeping bags tight enough to fit in storage bins.
The farthest away from home we camped was a trip to a Delaware beach. This trip was made extra special when a tornado was spotted off the coast and our campsite was under some major power lines. I remember being awaken in the middle of the night and hustled into the bus. Dad drove us inland to 'see the sunrise at Rehoboth Beach' and to shield us from the storm. When we returned, everything was flattened, all the trenches filled with water, and most of the other campers were on their way out. The tornado didn't make it all the way up the inlet, but still left a big impression.
As with any family, travel time was a bit difficult. One look from dad was enough to keep us from whining "Are we there yet?" To keep our spirits up, mom taught us a few songs. |
