Kendrick Mountain

The San Fransisco Peaks from the Kendricks Trail
One of my co-workers, Joe, had also done some backpacking so we decided around christmas break to go for a day trip but our schedules never quite synched up til 2 weeks before I left for Africa. Joe picked me up and we headed up near Flagstaff to hike in the cold upper atmosphere.

Kendricks Trailhead I wanted to test how I’d do in higher altitudes. Half the people that attempt Mt Kilimanjaro fail due to altitude sickness.
We took a trail that climbed up to Kendrick Mountain at about 10,500 feet – a little over halfway up Kili but still one of the highest points in Arizona. It was too warm for my new parka, but still I had two layers on. Joe on the Trail
Kendricks Trail At about 10,000 feet, we were trudging through a foot of snow and Joe’s shoes were not keeping his feet dry. I did not wish to carry Joe back with frost-bitten toes so we headed back down.

Snow on the Trail

But, I was very happy that I could make it to that altitude with no ill effects. I had taken my body up 9000 feet in about 5 hours (from Phoenix to Mt Kendrick by truck and foot) so my confidence was a bit higher and I felt I was ready for Kili.
