JOHN AND ELEANOR SARTORIS
1837
John Sartoris had given, in the census records of those days, his origin as German. Eleanor, his wife, had given her origin as Irish.
John was listed as an Overseer of Fisheries 1868 through 1876, a surveyor of highways in 1856, a hog reeve in 1840, a ferryman in 1838, and as a cooper in the 1871 Census for the area.
Pugwash, during the mid 1800's was a small coastal town, consisting mainly of farmers, carpenters, laborers, blacksmiths, etc. John, as a cooper, was one of eight barrelmakers in Pugwash. John and Eleanor's house, which was built in 1857, is still there today.
In 1838, when he was performing the duties of a ferryman, John was an important witness in an axe murder case. The man who was charged with the murder was found guilty and hanged.
Ten children were born to John and Eleanor Sartoris. They were, J ames Henry, Catherine Elizabeth, Eleanor, Mary, Jacob, Alexander, Abigail, Emmaline, Margaret, and Annie. John died June 6, 1888. Eleanor died July 26, 1881.

Born March 23, 1837 in Pugwash. Married Christina Fraser,
who was born in 1846 on JUNE 2, 1870. Christie was of Scottish descent.
James was listed as a cooper in Pugwash in 1907, and as an engineer in
a steam mill in the 1871 Census. James and Christie had 4 children; Emma,
Margaret, Clara, and Hiram (Harry). James died March 23, 1927.
Christie died June 19, 1918.
CATHERINE ELIZABETH SARTORIS
Born April 20, 1839, in Pugwash. Catherine was baptized at St. George's
Anglican Church in Pugwash on June 17, 1849. Catherine married E.J.
Sherwood and lived in Cranston, Rhode Island.
ELEANOR SARTORIS
Born November 25, 1841 in Pugwash. Eleanor was also baptized on June 17, 1849.
Eleanor married Warren Rockwell. Eleanor died on July 7, 1872, of consumption.
MARY SARTORIS
Born April 9, 1843 in Pugwash. Mary was baptized at the same time
Catherine was baptized. Mary married Benjamin Cobb, and lived in
Taunton, Massachusetts.
JACOB SARTORIS
Born March 19, 1846 in Pugwash. Jacob was also baptized at St. George's
Anglican Church in Pugwash on June 17, 1849. No other records have been
found for Jacob except that he was listed as living with John and Eleanor
and was a sailor, in the 1871 Census. Either he was lost at sea or settled
out of the country. America?
ALEXANDER SARTORIS
Born March 19, 1848 in Pugwash.
Alexander was also baptized on June 17, 1849. Alexander married
Margaret Jane Hingley who was born in 1853 in Riversdale, Hants
County, Nova Scotia. Marriage date July 22, 1876 in Truro, Nova
Scotia. Standing up for them at the wedding were Samuel Hingley,
Margaret's father, Daniel Hingley her brother, both farmers, John
Sartoris and Eleanor Sartoris.
ABIGAIL SARTORIS
Born March 19, 1848 in Pugwash. Abigail and Alexander were twins.
She too, was baptized on June 17, 1849, at The Christ Anglican Church
in Pugwash. Abigail married Charles Wilcox and lived in Plymouth,
Massachusetts.
EMMALINE SARTORIS
Born November 8, 1854 in Pugwash. Emmaline was baptized on
December 11, 1854 at The Christ Anglican Church in Pugwash.
She married Frank Le Fray and lived in Dorchester.
MARGARET SARTORIS
Born in 1855. Margaret was listed as a servant for a Dt. Joseph Clarke
and as a member of the John Sartoris household in the 1871 census.
Margaret died May 15, 1877. Her death was recorded in the Anglican
Church in Pugwash. There were no birth or baptism records for Margaret.
ANNIE MAUDE SARTORIS
Born in 1869 in Pugwash. Annie married Dr. N.R. Harnish and lived in
Washington, D.C. There were also no birth records for Annie.
