ROBERT SHERWOOD AND BETTY JANE SARTORIS
Sometime in the first year of their marriage, Robert wrote the following:
There are times, unaccountable and certainly infrequent, when all life seems to take on a new sheen. Perhaps a few of these times are the moments just following the time when a young man's future is suddenly glistening after his fancied bride answers yes to his proposal. Or, perhaps it is the time when she answers negatively but allows for a probable change of heart, knowing full well that that change will come and somehow passing that feeling on to him. Perhaps it is the time when the minister has just finished asking the pertinent questions and is about to pronounce the magical words that bind the couple into a unit of love and happiness. Or, maybe it is the moment when the bride announces that the vague thoughts are reality and that she is really taking part in God's master plan of constantly adding life to His universe. But, to me, one of the most outstanding, one of the most relaxing and beautiful, is the time when I am reading...my wife is ironing, the general air of unappreciated domesticity is apparent but not yet realized, when suddenly I notice that added to the sounds of the street coming in through the open window is the sound of my wife softly singing to herself. What could cause the tremendous feeling of love? The tranquility? The relaxation? What? I think that what she was singing...without any apparent thought, or direction, as something arising from her subconscious and therefore as something that truly was felt...made the difference: "You Were Meant for Me."
