Bertram was born in Bitburg in 1956. He married Gertrud Strick, who was born in Neu Ulm on January 29, 1961. They have one son, Alexander, who was born in Bad Oldesloe on February 26, 1989.
Bertram and Gertrud divorced in 2003. In 2010, Bertram married Nicole Boehnke, who was born in Luebeck on February 7, 1971.
